TOOOO Bright « Thread Started on Jul 12, 2007, 11:59am »
I posted this in the Ask Myles section...thought i'd post it here to...
my SRZ65 LE is way too bright. What would be a better pre amp choice for V1? GT 12ax7m or the 12ax7r2? I usually play with my gain at 1 to 2 oclock and my master at 11.
If you've got the cash a Brimar is SWEET in V1. RFT is a good second choice. I personally liked the NOS tubes best in V1 of my SRZ. Mike w/ KCA can hook you up here on the board.
Yeah the brimar is a nice option thats a little cheaper than a Mullard but somewhat similar sound. The Mullards have to my ears a characteristic "golden" kind of sound, if that makes sense. Kind of bumped up in the mids a bit, .... not a super accurate ruler flat responce like telefunken. The highs are usualy correspondingly slightly recessed, and in some amps .... perfect. Although as Myles would probably tell you, these tubes can be all over the map depending on the gain/output etc. The only answer ive found for NOS is to accumulate a bunch of different ones and swap till ya find the "magic one". They all vary quite a bit from era to era, and with diffrerences in construction. So far for most of my amps V1 is either an Amperex-Holland ( "champagne" ) or Mullard ( " golden" ). The Amperex, if you can pony up for a good strong one, is probably my favorite of all 12AX7's, it goes towards the Telefunken accuracy and power, but has just a tad of the mid warmth too! Good hunting!!
If you can go NOS thats the way to go. But if you're sticking to the options in your post, go with the GT12AX7M. It's a good strong tube. and it's warmer and a bit darker than most of todays offerings. Very full sound.
The JJ ECC803S is another nice fat, round sounding tube, although there has been some reliability issues reported on this forum. Go to http://www.dougstubes.com/. He'll make sure you get a good one, and the price is nice as well.
As mentioned above, experiment until you find the one that you like.

Thanks for the tips guys...Its interesting all the options you can have with preamp tubes...Unfortunately, it is impossible to try them all and find the best one...too exspensive...after all Ive read I went ahead and purchased the GT 12ax7m...We'll see...
