« Thread Started on Nov 7, 2009, 5:54pm »

I have a Maz Jr with the Dr Z Best cab.. and I am looking for more headroom.. but I am wondering about the Stangray cleans against the Maz Jr? Are they voiced similar or completely diff?

Pretty different I'd say. My Stingray loves the bridge pup on my Tele more than any other thing, but my Maz Jr loves the neck pup on my Strat. The 'ray is a lot louder, the Maz goes into more saturation. The Maz can sound more like a Fender or Marshall (in addition to Vox tones), the 'ray stays more in the Vox camp. They really are quite different, but both extra world class in what they do.

Ahh. I prefer more Fendery cleans. And I play a strat more.. So staying with the Maz might be the better thing for me.. Maybe trading the 18watt for a 38 watt if needed

I have a Maz Senior as well, and although it's not quite the same thing as the Jr, it is a GREAT Strat amp in its own right. If you're digging the Jr, the Sr is probably closer than any other Z amp in terms of similarity.

If you can try a 5751 tube in V1 of the Maz, it really helps to put it in Stangray territory. It's a lower gain tube. I did it when I had my Maz Jr. Gives the amp more clean headroom.

I did this when I owned a Maz Jr. It does give it more clean headroom. But the Maz Jr fell short for me in terms of getting a good useable high headroom clean tone at gig volumes. It did a fairly amazing job of it considering that it's 18 watts, but it didn't quite cut it. Great amp if pristine cleans are not important to you though.

The MAZ is an Amazing amp! I have played through before, However I didn't get to use any assistance in terms of boosts, OD's etc... I have considered the MAZ 38 as a possibile amp purchase, but The Ray is the Holy Grail of Headroom and Cleaness! It can sound Marshally if pushed. Fendery?? NO? I say this because while it is very cleasn It is so Different than my 67' Super Reverb! If you do decide on a Ray You wont be dissapointed I will assure you!

I consder what your talkng about to be a sin. You have a perfectly good amp that many people would love to be able to own. You should get that fixed first then buy another amp.

Yeah. Well I have to order a completely new circuit board. :( Its gonna cost $400 but will be worth it. I am basically talking about trading my Maz Jr though.. But I'll probably keep it for the best of both worlds.
