speaker change « Thread Started on Nov 1, 2009, 11:48am »
I have the stock Celestion 12gh30 in my 38 sr /verb combo and although I think it's a good match for that amp I'm thinking about changing to either a Weber 50 alnico bd OR Celestion gold in addition to adding a Z 210 ext. cab.I really kinda like the tone of the 12gh30 but I want just a little more when I use just the combo alone and also wondering what goes good with the 210 cab,I play mostly country with classic rock and jazzy stuff on the side,I'm leaning towards the Celestion gold (my wife would kill me if she knew how much these cost) think there is that big of a difference between the Weber and the Gold?

Big difference... Weber in 50 watt is warmer, less efficient / little lower volume, good if you want to tame the amp a bit...
C-Gold is a bit brighter (will break in some and get a little warmer but sounds good right off the bat), articulate and in your face, is More efficient / little louder... if your looking for a little more than your G12-H30 this is your speaker... unless you want even more which would be something like an Emi Tonker or a Wizard.
both are great speakers,
I'm a big Weber fan myself but sounds like the Gold is what you're looking to get outta that set up, and it'll sound great with the 2x10 cab and the styles your doing.

Well, having come full circle on the speaker issues I am back with the Tonker in the MAZ38. I loved the Fang in the MAZ but the Tonker just seems to have something special...and frankly as much as I like the Fang in the MAZ it sounds better in the 28, so that means the GB will be coming out of there... the beauty of this is that I know how certain speakers will sound and can adjust the rig accordingly. I think I will start grabbing a couple of 1-12 cabs and have them loaded and ready to go. For me I do know this, either the Tonker or the RedFang is the way to go for me with the MAZ...with the slightest edge going to the Tonker. I also play acoustic thru it and it does a better job of that than the Fang does. It also can handle that powerhouse clean sound , and frankly its just plain huge sounding. sorta more of everything....this speaker quest makes much more sense than chasing complete amps. Had I been onto this years ago I coulda saved boatloads of cash... YMMV of course

When I got my MAZ, it had the stock speaker in it. I was pleased with the sound and never planned on changing it out. I'm the type of guy that keeps things simple....I have never changed anything stock on my guitars or amplifiers. I just buy them and play them as is. Heck, I don't even like using pedals. Anyway, after seeing many glowing reviews of the Celestion Gold, I decided to do it. I changed out the speaker, and gave the amp a fresh set of tubes. WOW! It was an astounding difference. Furthermore, the more I play it....and the speaker becomes more and more "broken in," it seems to be improving. I absolutely love it.

Celestion G12-65 may be exactly what you're looking for in your MAZ 38 Sr.
Smooth, clear highs, super creamy breakup, big lows, great response, detailed, chorus-y, violinish mids. Great speaker for cleans, dirt, and beyond.
Dialed in Tele (or any guitar really) + ANY Dr Z Amp in (one of) it's sweet spots + g12-65 = ABSOLUTE TONE MAGIC
I have a Celestion Gold, G12-30's, V30's, Greenbacks, old Blue Vox's, Fane Alnico, JBL K120's, Two Rock Eminence, Webers, Tone Tubby, etc... and while they all do something unique, the G12-65 just kills all of them in almost every situation. The Celestion Gold is a great speaker, The other alnicos and K120's are what they are, the Two Rock sings sweet, the Tone Tuby is an awesome speaker, but for the missing link in your tone.....Do yourself a favor and try a CELESTION G12-65

reinhold,
Any idea how the G12-65 would compare to a V30 when installed in a Z-Best in place of the V3o?
